Keyword research
Initially I am trying a mass production approach to Google adsense using outsourcing. So for me secockpit was the only real option. I still love my market samurai (anyone remember gtrends and spreadsheets for this) it does cost me time.
Secockpit is server based so I can give it multiple research tasks and still have a computer that can do something else.
With the iPhone/iPad app you can throw keywords at it on the go and return home to see the results.
The process starts with seed keyword generation. These can come from anywhere but using semrush to spy on a major website is a great way to get ideas. Pay for a month gather tons of ideas and then cancel until you need it again.
Seed keywords
A seed keyword is not your end goal for creating a site. It is purely a starting point. When put in to a keyword tool you will get other keywords that are loosely connected. Often you will get ideas that you would never have thought of.
It is the results from the search on the keyword you are interested in. Forget the seed unless less it meets your initial filter.
Initial filter
What i am looking for now is a main keyword to form a site around.
From the key phrases thrown out from the keyword tools I now filter trying to find keywords with 1000 plus local searches in my target country. Mostly the US at present.
Then I am looking for cost per click more than $1 and high level of advertising competition.
Luckily secockpit tabulation this perfectly. Secockpit also gives a rough indicator of competition strength for the positions 1-3 and 1-10. Sorting on these I dig deeper.
Dig deeper
Digging deeper involves looking at the top ten sites analysis which is a click away. I am then looking for signs of weakness like low mozrank and low number of juice links (those that support the site rather than duplicates). Other factors like non root domains whether there is obvious title optimisation play a part.
If that looks good then I look at the real top 10 in my browser with the seo quake plugin enabled. This gives another sanity check.
Secockpit does not seem to show the current results it is up to 30 days old. So it is worth checking to give another view. I don’t see this as a weakness as google is changing all the time and you now have two data points rather than one.
This process is a gut feel one. Which is why I keep records so I can post mortem the site and it’s rankings.
Fleshing it out
If I feel I have a good. Keyword I then look to see if there are supporting keywords to build the site out with. I follow a similar process but reduce the search criteria to more than 100 or 200 searches per month.
If I can see 4 or more other keywords I will look to build a site.

Really you are working hard before building any site, doing research for the potential keywords that can convert and help you make money. Till now I was just using Google Keyword Tools for searching best keyword for my blog site but seems that your strategy and tool is much better and I should dare to give it a try.
Hi Pamela, Thanks for the comment. Google Keyword tools is great but just to slow to scale into a real business. SECockpit is very fast but if you don’t have the budget take a look at market samurai or long tail pro. Rob
People deserve good life and mortgage loans or secured loan will make it much better. Just because freedom depends on money.
Hey Rob, like the site and also like following the progress of people who are serious. I’ve had limited success – and enjoyment – form building and promoting Adsense sites. If I’m going to work very hard on search engine rankings, I like the thought of higher commissions through other avenues. Yet Adsense has the advantage of not having to sell anything, which is a plus for some.
At any rate, all the best!
Hi Luke,
Thanks for the comment. I look on Adsense as a potential end point but also an indicator commercial value. If you can get Adsense to work you may find other ways to make money from the traffic. They may be more profitable or may be not. Once you have traffic you can try different things.
The hard work for me at the moment is getting the rankings and then traffic.
Google can be a nasty mistress, teasing you with initial rankings and then dropping you for months.
My rankings are starting to return, so I have hope. Plus I’ve seen reasonable Cost Per Clicks from 1 or 2 niche sites.
Good luck
Rob
